Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator publish no telemetry on their own, so a HUD needs a free community plugin. Put scs-telemetry.dll in the game’s bin\win_x64\plugins folder, start the game and load your profile. Horizon Labs then reads the plugin’s shared memory and draws the HUD over the game.
Install the plugin
Horizon Labs does not ship the plugin: you download it from its author. The one Horizon Labs reads is scs-sdk-plugin by RenCloud.
- Get
scs-telemetry.dllfrom the plugin’s page. Read its notes first: the page lists the game versions it has been tested on, and the plugin and the program reading it must use the same revision. - Find the game folder and open
bin\win_x64. Both games use the same layout. - Create a
pluginsfolder there if it does not exist, and copy the DLL into it. Do this for each game you want to use: the plugin is installed per game. - Start the game and load your profile. The plugin’s page says the game shows a message when the plugin loads and asks you to confirm it.
- Start Horizon Labs, select Euro Truck Simulator 2 or American Truck Simulator, and check Live status while you drive. There is nothing to enable on the Horizon Labs side.
Run the game in borderless windowed mode so the overlay can sit on top. If the game is in fullscreen, switch it in the video options.
What the trucks give the HUD
The truck games send driving data, not lap timing, so the HUD works in free roam and on deliveries. Horizon Labs gets these fields from the plugin, the same list for both games:
- Engine: speed (km/h and mph), RPM and the rev limit, gear.
- Inputs: throttle, brake, clutch, steering and the handbrake.
- Dynamics: lateral, longitudinal and vertical G-force, plus pitch, roll and yaw. A G-force readout and a drift angle value are also listed.
- Car: fuel level as a percentage and the truck name.
No lap times, tyre data, suspension travel or engine temperatures come through for the trucks, so widgets that need them stay empty. Each game’s truck simulator page lists the fields, and the Designer flags any binding the game does not send.
A truck-style HUD idea
A truck HUD is calmer than a race HUD. Start from the fields above and keep it readable at a glance:
- Large gear and speed in the lower centre. Trucks have many gears, so make the gear digit big and easy to read.
- An RPM arc around the speed that fills toward the rev limit. Keep it thin: the engine sits in a narrow band most of the time.
- A fuel bar on the side, with a colour change as the tank gets low, bound to the fuel percentage.
- A handbrake light that switches on with the handbrake value.
- Two small pedal bars for throttle and brake, and a thin clutch bar if you drive manual.
- A lateral G bar that shows how hard a corner pulls the truck, bound to lateral G. It is a quiet way to see when a trailer starts to push.
- A pitch needle that shows the road’s slope, bound to pitch. It is useful on hills with a heavy trailer.
You can build this in the Designer by binding each layer to its telemetry field, then send it to the running overlay. The walkthrough is in Your first HUD in the Designer.
Troubleshooting
- The HUD stays empty
- Check that the DLL is in
bin\win_x64\pluginsof the game you are running, not of the other truck game, and that you confirmed the plugin message. Load a profile and be in the driver’s seat: the menus send nothing. - The plugin stopped working after a game update
- Plugins are built for game versions. Check the plugin’s page for a build that matches the current game version.
- The overlay is behind the game
- Switch the game to borderless windowed mode.
Good to know
This is the shared-memory route: the plugin writes the data into memory and Horizon Labs reads it, as explained in How game telemetry works. Horizon Labs does not inject into the game or edit its files. You add the plugin yourself, and each game’s own terms still apply. To show the HUD on stream, see HUD in OBS and streaming apps.
